Here follows a thread on why the Commonwealth Government should increase funding to private schools…

Government funds to private schools keeps fees at lower and more attainable levels, meaning more kids can go to these schools.

One of the main advantages of attending a private school is the social and cultural capital you receive simply by attending.

This capital would be called a privilege in modern parlance, and it has a real world positive impact on your life, qv getting a job.

The more government money ploughed into private schools, the more thinly spread this privilege is, making it less exclusive.

In, say, the US, private schools are much more exclusive. Power and wealth is maintained in a small subset – the 1% – out of reach for most.

And that is self-perpetuating, and you see its effect in the higher reaches of the US politic being occupied by oligarch families.

Cheaper fees means aspirational families can access the world of old boys clubs &c. Some schools will always be out of reach but not all.

Not much difference b/w public and private education for smart kids. But for average and below, private schools can raise up strugglers.

This isn't zero sum: the extra funding for private schools that I advocate for shouldn't come out of public. It should come out of defence.

I am pro the mere existence of private schools bc they offer specialty focus like music/sport/performance. I tolerate the religious element.

You can see all the benefits of your tax dollars at work in private schools in this video from my alma mater… https://t.co/6RM585xjz0

You can tell it's private school fancy because it's on Vimeo instead of YouTube!

BTW, 'alma mater' means 'old school' in the secret language that only rich people know about.
